My final art piece- Inquiring

For my issue about unequal pay between men and women I have chosen three guiding inquiry questions to help me find out more about it.

They are
1. What are the percentages of the pay gap?
2. Why does the pay gap exist?
3.What can we do to fix it?

I will be recording my inquiry notes in a google doc which you can see here-

My Final Art Piece- The Beginning

For the Intermediate current U.O.I we are looking into a world issue and were told that we needed to choose one and create our own piece of art on this topic. The issue I eventually came to was the inequality in pay between men and woman, especially woman of ethnicity. I chose this topic because it is not fair and needs to be changed, especially by the time I start working. It is not fair because women work equally as hard if not harder than men but still get payed less, sometimes by a drastic amount. This is the reason that women are pictured as weaker and more domestic, because it is easier to support on a mans wages because they generally just get payed more. Just because a woman gives birth to the child doesn't mean she has to stay at home to care for them and send the man off to work every day. A woman is portrayed as weaker because of thousands of years of evolution with the oppression of women. This is the basic outline of the reason I finally decided on this topic to express this and it is not well known enough as an issue to the people who could actually make a change.

Cultural fair recount

The most enjoyable part of our montessori cultural fair in my opinion was the Japan and Thailand activity. This consisted of a sushi making activity and a Kahoot quiz on Thailand. This activity was made by Jenna. The way this activity ran was that half of your group would make sushi while the other half would try the Kahoot quiz, just before halfway through the time we had the groups swap and do the other activity. Before time is up everybody congregates together to enjoy the sushi feast.

When I was taking part in this activity I made the sushi first. The process of sushi making is relatively simple and easy to do as long as you have the right ingredients and materials. The first thing you do is get a small bamboo mat made for sushi rolling and place a seaweed piece on it. Next you fill up the seaweed piece with sticky rice except a small row across the top approximately 1-1.5cm wide. After that, you put in the fillings. To do this you put whatever filling you want across the middle of the rice so it reaches both ends, this in my case was small strips of cucumber and carrot. Finally you roll up the sushi, the technique for this is to have the seaweed touching the edge with the strip on the other side before you start to roll. To roll you pick up the edge of the mat and push along with the sushi until it reaches itself rolled over, you press the end to help the sushi stick the pick up the end of the mat again. Repeat this process until you reach the end of the mat.

After I finished making my sushi I played the Kahoot quiz. My team was Lucy and George from the junior classes. First we were shown a small slideshow about Thailand to tell us more about the country and give us the answers to the quiz. The Kahoot was 6 questions long and on a variety of subjects including food, animals and habitats. In the end, our team won!

Once we finished the Kahoot everybody joined together at a table set up in the middle of the room to eat our sushi that we made. I ate my sushi with chopsticks that were lain out on the table because I have been taught how to properly use them. Since everybody had to do 2 activities we only had about 5 minutes to eat all the sushi before we had to move on to the next activity, Korean kite making. We ate almost all of the sushi in time and it was delicious! Surprisingly most of the pieces stayed together and were able to be eaten with chopsticks. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and my favourite part of cultural fair.

Itime reflection

I inquired into Medieval England because I want to know more about my history and be appreciative of modern technology. I understand and can help others be appreciative of what they have. I work best when I don't have and distractions. I lose track when I keep getting pulled away from my work. While I engaged in and explored Medieval England, I became more reflective. During Itime I showed appreciation. Next time I know to set more reasonable goals for what I can achieve and these are some things that I can do.

  • Know what I can do within a topic.
  • Choose just what I find the most interesting.
  • Be focused on one thing at a time.
I can see that I need to work on pacing my work and other activities. I used to think that i always work with correct punctuation, but now I know that I don't fix it when I'm focused.

Itime

This week I am working on a special project called Itime. In this week we can research about one thing with no distractions. I chose medieval England. I am looking at- the kings, the Bayeux tapestry, the battle of Hastings, castles, the plague, the peasants revolt, food and drink, peasant life and houses, education, the hundred years war, the names and surnames, the crusades and law and order.

I will presents this with a timeline of the kings and a booklet of the other information.

Photosynthesis

For our weather Unit of Inquiry we had to learn how to do a flow chart. We all (The Intermediates) did one on the process of Photosynthesis. Here is mine-

Photosynthesis Flow Chart
Step 1- The plant absorbs water vapour from the soil
                         ↓
Step 2- The plant absorbs carbon dioxide from the air using stomata on the underside of their leaves.
                        ↓
Step 3- The
chlorophylls in the plants absorb the
sun's rays/energy.
                       ↓
Step 4- The sun's energy then splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen molecules.
                      ↓
Step 5- The carbon dioxide allows the oxygen to leave easier into the air for us to breathe
                       ↓

Step 6- The carbon dioxide and hydrogen are then used to form glucose which feeds the plants and gives them energy to continue the photosynthesis.
